Difference between kbps and kBps

Internet service providers in India (and internationally) use kbps or mbps as the unit to measure the internet speeds.

Kbps stands for kilobits per second.

However, on computers we use kilobytes and not kilobits.

And 1 kilobyte is equivalent to 8 kilobits.

So, essentially if you are on a 256 kbps plan, you are only going to get 32 kBps on your connection and not 256 kBps.

Similarly, a 512 kbps plan would deliver 64 kBps.

1 mbps plan would deliver 128 kBps and so on.
