MTNL TriBand Broadband FAQs

FAQs

Q. Can I apply for MTNL Triband online?

A. Yes, you can. Online booking is much more faster and hassle-free as compared to booking on phone.
Q. How do I know whether I have used up my free MB limit or not?

A. You can check your broadband usage details at -

For Delhi Users - MTNL Delhi Site
For Mumbai Users - MTNL Mumbai Site

Q. What is my default MTNL Broadband password? I haven't yet changed it.

A. The default username is your landline phone number, and the password is your CA (Customer Account) number. It is mentioned in your bill.

Q. I should get xxxx free MBs as per my plan. But I only have xxxx MBs. Why is that so?

A. If you got your connection/plan activated after the 1st of any month, you get only the free MBs that amount for the number of days left. For example, if you get a 590 NU plan activated on the 12th Of January, you'll get only (1024/31)*18 = 594.58 MBs. Thus you get only the free MBs for the 18 days left in January.

Q. I'm experiencing frequent disconnections and/or slow speeds. What could be the possible reasons?

A. The most possible reason could be poor signal. Open DSL Router properties page. Click on DSL Status (or something similar to that). Check SNR Margin & Line Attenuation values over here.

SNR Margin - This is a measure (in dB) of how good your data signal is. Higher numbers are better. If this number drops below 6, you'll start to have sync problems.
Attenuation - Measures (in dB) how much signal loss there is on the line - this should be a low number and in any case should be no more than around 60-65 dB.

If these values don't fall into proper range, contact your local exchange and tell them about this.

Q. I've heard that MTNL is now giving connections with upto 2 Mbps speeds. So why am I not getting 2 Mbps?

A. MTNL has upgraded its existing users to 2 Mbps in most areas, but some areas are still left to be upgraded. Contact your local exchange for more information regarding this. Please note that only limited plan users have been upgraded to 2 Mbps, Unlimited and NU plan users are still being given 256 Kbps. If you are on a limited (data or time) based plan, and you are still not getting 2 Mbps, we suggest you call 1504 and lodge a complaint.

Q. Can I use somebody else's username and password to surf the internet from my router?

A. A simple answer - NO. This is because of the recently introduced 'Port Binding' feature. This feature BINDS the Broadband Account "Username" to a particular Broadband port in the Exchange which will result in usage of your account only from your location. As an example case, if the Username is "24294444" and this telephone line is connected to Broadband Port No. 12 at MTNL exchange then with the "Port Binding Feature" enabled, Username "24294444" shall be able to connect only from Port 12, i.e. the Username gets binded to the port. This Username shall not work from any other Broadband Port which shall avoid any misuse of Broadband Connection from other location.

Q. Are uploads also counted in my free MB quota?

A. No. MTNL provides it's customers with free uploads. But yes, a very minimal amount of data is downloaded while uploading too, which cannot be eliminated. That download is counted in your quota. But not the upload.

Q. The MTNL usage site is not opening again and is usually not working. Is there any other way, by which I can check my broadband usage?

A. Datafox for BSNL DataOne and MTNL Triband, is an easy to use, cross platform & customizable extension to Mozilla Firefox, which you can use to monitor your MTNL TriBand bandwidth usage. It is not a standalone program and will only work when installed as an extension to Firefox. DataFox is non-intrusive and does not monitor your network activity, it just obtains the information from the MTNL websites. The collected info is displayed in your Firefox status bar area and additional info is displayed in a tooltip.

There are other ways in which you can monitor both your uploads as well as downloads. Many free softwares are available for this purpose. Net Meter is such a free utility. Therefore, you can have a rough estimate of how much of you're bandwidth you have used up.
